Synonym: | Caenorhabditis vulgaris |
Comment: | Caenorhabditis species have known to form facultative or obligate associations with other soil invertebrates. C. remanei, in particular, has been observed to form associations with terrestial moluscs and terrestial isopods. Unlike C.elegans and C.briggsae that reproduce largely via self-fertilization of hermaphrodites and very rarely outcross with males C. remanei exhibits an obligately outcrossing breeding system with an even sex ratio. |

Comment: | Caenorhabditis sp. 11 is a currently undescribed species. The sequenced strain, JU1373, is an isofemale line isolated by Marie-Anne Felix from a sample collected by Valerie Robert and Loic Sable in January 2008 from rotting torch ginger flowers (Etlingeria elatior) on the island of La Reunion. The species is hermaphroditic with 2.5% males in a laboratory population. |

Comment: | Caenorhabditis sp. 7 is a currently undescribed species. The sequenced strain, JU1286, is an isogenic inbred line derived from strain JU1199 by 20 consecutive matings of 1 virgin female and 1 male. The inbreeding was done by Marie-Anne Felix. Strain JU1199 was isolated in June 2007 by Matthias Herrmann from a rotting citrus fruit in Begoro, Ghana, Africa. C. sp. 7 is a gonochoristic species with about equal proportions of males and females. |

Comment: | Candida albicans is one of the most commonly encountered human pathogens, causing a wide variety of infections ranging from mucosal infections in generally healthy persons to life-threatening systemic infections in individuals with impaired immunity. Candida albicans differs in various respects from other genome sequences in that both copies of the genome are explicitly represented. Similar to many other Candida species, a CUG codon in Candida albicans corresponds to a serine residue instead of the universal leucine. |

Comment: | Candida glabrata is a pathogenic hemiascomycete yeast that is the second most frequent causative agent of human candidasis, after Candida albicans. Despite its name, it is phylogenetically more closely related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae than to other Candida species. Candida glabrata is haploid and has no known sexual cycle. |

Comment: | The yeast Candida tropicalis is the second most pathogenic Candida species after Candida albicans and is more often associated with deep fungal infections than normal mucosa. Candida tropicalis is an asexual diploid organism. Similar to many other Candida species, a CUG codon in Candida tropicalis corresponds to a serine residue instead of the universal leucine. |

Comment: | Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a single celled chlorophyte. Highly adaptable, these green algae live in many different environments throughout the world. Normally deriving energy from photosynthesis, with an alternative carbon source, C. reinhardtii can also thrive in total darkness. The DNA used for the genomic sequence was CC-503 cw92 mt+, a cell-wall deficient strain, which was used in order to get high-quality DNA. In addition the BAC library was also prepared from strain CC-503 cw92 mt+. Most of the EST libraries sequenced at Stanford were prepared in the wild-type strain CC-1690 21 gr mt+. Both CC-503 and CC-1690 derive from the same original field isolate, made in Massachusetts in 1945, but they have been separate since at least the mid-1950s. S1 D2, a strain used for some ESTs and comparative sequencing, is a field isolate from Minnesota, dating from the 1980s. |

Comment: | Cryptosporidium hominis is the dominant species which infects humans. Although generally self-limiting, this disease can cause fatalities in children and immunocompromised adults. The genome sequence of Cryptosporidium hominis shows features consistent with its life cycle as an obligate parasite. This organism lacks the genes necessary for the production of a number of biochemical building block such as nucleotides and amino acids. To compensate for this lack, the genome contains a large number of transporter or transporter-like genes. |
